you wake up to four--four? the number four. the number of corners of a rectangle. the number of death. the number of years it has been since you had woken up. the number four. you wake up there. the walls are white--the color of snow, of light, of absence. you are...you are the color white, or at least, you once were. you had nothing, after all. you were nothing. but there was someone else there. someone dressed in pink. your eyes are blue, and they looked at her blankly. you remember the first words she said to you. they were...they were...[break][break]
the words are soft. the bed is soft. she had asked, "how are you feeling?" or was it, "are you okay?" or was it, "you are awake." or was it...you digress. you realise that there is not much use to trying to remember. you know one thing, though. at least one thing. that one thing. she had said to you, "you have amnesia." and in reality, at the time, those words did not register at all, but you think that is what she said. what else could it have been? but you are probably making up things now, as you always have been. have you always been doing this?

one thing is for sure: you did not know how to speak then. speak. say something. you test your voice, ahhhh. you still can talk. good. what else? oh, you did not know how to do things by yourself. basic things. human things. eating, washing, sometimes walking. you remember stumbling a lot, your legs crumpling as if they suddenly forgot what it means to be tall. you remember(?) the first few days in a blur. the hospital--the place where you consider your beginning, which as it turns out is where people actually begin--did not have the resources to care for you. resources? you mean, they did not care. or rather, they had more important things to busy themselves with. you were instead transferred to an...a...asy...

you forget. or rather, you don't want to remember. you've gotten good at that: sorting between your memories, at least you think so. you know which ones are the ones you made up. you know which ones happened after your birth, after you woke up. you know...do you know? do you really, truly know?

everything is...confusing. you write because it is confusing. the world is confusing.

maybe the punishment wasn't enough
